Tuesday 25 August 2009. As we sailed away from Samos, we were determined to not give in to sleep and to stay out of the cabin long enough to visit the special event of the night - the late night buffet.
So we'll take the opportunity to have a look at a few features of onboard life. Starting with the casino.
The ship's onboard shops are open whenever the ship is out at sea. Special promotions are held on different nights such as alcohol and tobacco, jewellery, clothing and accessories.
At 11:30pm the buffet is opened for passengers to take photographs for half an hour before any of the fabulous displays of food are spoiled by people tucking in. These parrots are made from paper napkins.
Now that's what I call a meringue!!! You will get at least one of these special buffets each week onboard a cruise ship and even if you can't face eating another thing, it is worth taking your camera and going to have a look.
Delicate portions of sponge, mousses, cake, cream and fruit. There is so much to see just on this one tray!
A few displays are for looking at only. Here a harp-shaped backdrop has been made out of chocolate, setting off the white chocolate mask.
Some ships specialise in making recognisable models or sculptures such as this Red Indian head dress, made from melon and pineapple whilst others simply create abstract patterns of colour and texture from different foods. There was a mixture of both on the Celebration.
I loved the 3-piece band in the centre piece of this cheese display! There is plenty of time to walk around and see everything before it is spoiled. There were a good two or three hundred passengers had come to see the buffet and we were moving in lines in order to see everything on this night.
A suckling pig - we were on the wrong side of it to see the face I'm afraid, but the right side not to see the face, if you see what I mean! Notice the pineapple - sliced and then the slices fitted back into the rind of the fruit.
An entire poached salmon with head and tail and decorated with cucumber and tomato, oranges and lemon and what on earth the blue thing is, I don't know! In front of it are slices of salmon decorated with a pea resting on an olive and then a sliver of red pepper.
