Blackpool's Illuminated Tram

This is Blackpool's illuminated tram. Well, I suppose I should say it is Blackpool's only illuminated tram still in service. If you visit the Rigby Road tram sheds and peer in (they won't let you in these days in case you fall and sue them - have I mentioned I hate the Compensation Industry?) then you can make out the rest of the illuminated fleet mostly if not totally from the 1960s, each of which looked superb.

The current one looks like what it actually seems to be - a normal tram with the top cut off in a fancy shape and a bit more fancy stuck on top. Sigh… There was talk a few months ago in the paper of the Wild West Train tram being restored and brought back into service. I hope so, but my favourite was the 1950s style rocketship! I wait in hope.

  1. Hello John,

Just a quick note to point out that there are actually 2 feature cars. One is 736 which is a Warship with a ship horn which looks fantastic and has been in service for about 3 - 4 years after an overhaul. The one you have a picture of is 737 which is supposed to look like the 'Fisherman's friend' trawler which is their logo and hence sponsored by them, I think it does look like the Trawler 'FD241 CEVIC'. I would also like to point out that this is a single decker.

You will also be pleased to know that the western train is currently getting overhauled (and will smoke from the funnel and have a disabled access lift) and The Rocket will be overhauled after that.

Hope this is useful information for you.

Although this may sound a bit geeky I like the Illuminated trams as they are a key attraction for a town like Blackpool which is now seemingly queiter and quieter in the Summer!

    Roll on the Lights!

    Many Thanks,

    Blackpool Boy!

  2. Thanks for this Blackpool Boy! Smoke from the funnel... well, not sure that's a good idea but still!

And as I can tell from the weather which has turned suddenly appalling, here we are in Illuminations time!

Love the name Blackpool Boy, sounds like a super-hero or villain...

"Holy Towers, Batman, it's Blackpool Boy!"
"Stand back Robin, he's trying to ensnare us in his candy floss!"

Good news that the Rocket is scheduled for restoration.

    John
